This damps the resonance of the fiddle very slightly, and that's about it. It might make it a decibel or two quieter, but if you're worried about disturbing someone with your playing, this won't make a noticeable difference. Larger rubber and metal mutes are available and seem to fit the Cricket quite well. For $2.50 it was worth a shot, but I wouldn't recommend it.
